Summary
Time dilation is the phenomenon wherein a person feels that time is moving at a slower speed with reference to the outside world. Psychologist Dr.David Eagleman from the University of Texas set out to explore the role of chemicals in this phenomenon with the help of an experiment involving a “perceptual chronometer". This device flashes numbers in such a rapid fashion that under normal circumstances a brain will not be able to distinguish the numbers but if time is running in slow motion then one can possibly read those numbers clearly. A person was made to fall from a height and was made to read the numbers on his way down. It was observed that the person was able to read the numbers .Under high stress; adrenaline was released that affects the chemical pathway of our mental stopwatch, slowing down time. Warren Mac from Duke University proved the same phenomenon by giving mind altering drugs such as marijuana and cocaine to rats. The experiments demonstrated that our sense of time passing is an internal process and it is influenced by chemicals.
