Summary
In the age of high speed automobiles, smart and intelligent solutions for auto safety are the need of the hour. The Laboratory for Intelligent and Safe Automobiles (LISA) is one such institution that is working towards the development of efficient and reliable technologies to ensure optimum levels of auto safety. Mohan Trivedi, Director at LISA and Professor at UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, and his team of researchers have embarked upon the development of the next generation of technologies in the arena of automobile safety. One such application is the Speed Compliance Aid using Dynamic Active Displays (DAD) for driver assistance. This system can display how fast the car is traveling above the speed limit by monitoring the same by using GPS to locate the vehicle on an annotated map with speed limits. A computer in the car calculates the degree of violation of the speed limit of the car and the results are etched on the windshield for the driver to see. A number of scientific studies have indicated the effectiveness of the system. This and many more such systems in areas of sensing, computer vision, multisensor fusion, affect and intent analysis, situational criticality, classification recognition, alarms and alerts are being developed by co-ordination between the academia and industry.
