Summary
Can life exist without sunlight? You must have heard of photosynthesis but have you heard of chemosynthesis? Can life exist under humongous pressures of ocean depths? Can life survive in extremely hot climate surrounded by lethally toxic environment? In 1977 a deep sea submarine descended over 8000 feet (2.4 km) to investigate hydrothermal activity on the ocean floor. This expedition led to one of the biggest biological discoveries made on earth. Hydrothermal vents - immense chimney like structures which were several stories high and spewing hot water geysers rich in minerals and nutrients. The temperature around these deep sea vents was a scorching 760 F (400 C). Astonishingly these areas were thriving with life which has never seen sunlight and which was living off the energy of the earth.
