Summary
Rays of light are controlled and focused when projecting movies. If sound waves can be focused in the same way, it opens up a whole new range of possibilities for the use of sound. A conventional loud speaker generates audio waves in every direction, which spread out as they travel, like ripples on a pond. The volume heard by the listener drops off quickly, the further away he is. Some designs use highly directional ultrasound at much higher frequencies to carry regular audio. These travel in a focused beam, so they don’t spread out and they don’t get quieter even over long distances.
This long range acoustical device, or LRAD, can be used for a variety of purposes, including as a weapon. Soldiers standing right next to the LRAD will be quite comfortable. But attacking soldiers several yards to several miles away can be incapacitated by the sound.
