Summary
The earth’s ultimate energy source is the sun. The sun’s energy is generated by nuclear fusion. Fusion can be generated here on earth as well, and if harnessed, can give the earth a very long-term sustainable energy source. The scientists at the joint European-Torus nuclear fusion research facility near Oxford are investigating fusion for its potential to provide an unlimited supply of cheap and clean energy.
All nuclear power plants today split atoms in nuclear fission reactors. The main drawbacks are a lack of good options for the disposal of spent fuel, and the potential for accidents which could spew radiation into the air or ground water. Fusion reactors avoid both these problems – atoms aren’t split apart, they are fused together. JET, the Joint-European Torus facility where these tests are taking place, is the largest man-made magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment currently in operation.
