Summary
Dr. Anthony Atala of Wake Forest University succeeded in growing tissues and organs in his research lab. He created a fully functioning bladder and successfully implanted them in patients. See this video to learn about his method where he starts with a petri dish and ends up with a vital body organ. Right now Atala is working to grow 20 different tissues and organs including complex structures like hearts and blood vessels. Atala is experimenting with other new generation technologies where he builds body organs using a device similar to an inkjet printer where he fills the cartridges with cells instead of print. Layers and layers of cells are iteratively printed thereafter and within two hours of printing, he could create a two chambered heart.
